What Happens When Your Car Runs Out of Gas?

Believe it or not, your engine won’t suddenly die the moment your gas tank is empty. Your vehicle will give you several warning signs that it is slowly running out of fuel and it would be best to get gas or pull over to a safe parking spot if you’re too far from a gas station. Here are some of the signs you should look out for:

  1. One of the first signs of an empty gas tank is loss of power . If you’re driving with the gas light on and you notice that your vehicle is no longer accelerating appropriately (or at all!), this is a clear sign that your car is completely depleted of fuel.
  2. If you feel a sudden jerky moment as your driving. This often feels like it is coming directly from behind the steering wheel. You’ll feel as if your car stops for a second or so and then suddenly is thrusted forward.
  3. If your engine starts to make odd spluttering-like sounds, you really should take this as a sign that it is time to pull over!

The most important thing to remember is that safety is a number one priority . If you are out of gas and your vehicle is starting to exhibit physical signs of fuel depletion, the safest thing to do is to pull over and put your hazards on. Trust us, it’s much better to heed the warnings your vehicle is giving you than to come to a sudden stop in the middle of a busy highway!
